FETP Competencies:

E-FETP curriculum is based on identified competencies:
Compulsory competencies Advanced Intermediate Basic
Public health surveillance data analysis and Evaluation
  • Characterize and evaluate the operation of a public health surveillance system
  • Conduct a descriptive analysis of the data collected by a public health surveillance system
  • Write a surveillance summary report that includes a description of the surveillance system
  • Presentation of the data using appropriate text, tables, and graphs; interpretation of the findings
  • Evaluate the public health surveillance system and make recommendations for improvement
Outbreak Investigation Field Investigation of an Acute Public Health Problem
  • Actively participate in at least one field investigations of acute health events such an outbreaks, mass environmental exposures, emergencies or disasters.
  • Resident must have an active role in more than one aspect of each field investigation (e.g., not only interviewing patients, not only entering data, etc.)
  • Resident must commit at least 5 working days to each investigation (can include planning, data collection, data analysis, and follow-up)
Laboratory and Biosafety
  • Implementing SOPs for handling hazardous materials, including protocols for storing, transporting, and disposing of hazardous materials.
  • Using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with hazardous materials, such as gloves, safety glasses, lab coats, and respirators.
  • Knowing the suitable sample to be taken from different outbreak settings in addition to its storing and transportation.
Planned epidemiologic study
  • Design, write a protocol for, and conduct an epidemiologic study using analytic epidemiology principles and methods.

  • Write an abstract to be submitted to a scientific conference

Scientific manuscript
  • Write, as first author, a scientific manuscript based on work conducted as an FETP resident to be ready for submission to a peer-reviewed journal
Take the lead in developing communication and providing guidance in risk response settings
  • Provide input on the content of Public health messages.
  • Combat misinformation and spread awareness through effective messaging.
  • Development of guidance for critical response activities
  • Provide leadership through coordinating activities at Emergency Operations Centers, serving as subject matter experts in risk communication.
Elective competencies
Brief epidemiologic report
  • Write and submit a brief report of an epidemiologic investigation or analysis to an epidemiologic bulletin.
Teaching
  • Provide classroom teaching of an epidemiologic topic.
Mentoring
  • Mentor a field-epidemiologist-in-training.
